Air India Delhi–Mumbai Flight Returns After Engine Oil Pressure Issue

New Delhi, Monday | 22-12-2025: An Air India flight from Delhi to Mumbai returned to the national capital soon after take-off on Monday morning after a technical issue was detected mid-air, the airline and aviation regulator confirmed.

The flight, operated by Air India, departed Delhi at around 6.30 am. Soon after take-off, the pilots noticed low oil pressure in the right-hand engine of the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft while the flaps were being retracted. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the oil pressure later dropped to zero, following which the crew shut down the engine and decided to return to Delhi as per standard safety steps.

The aircraft landed safely at Delhi airport, and all passengers and crew got off without any issue. No injuries were reported. Air India said the return was a routine safety decision and the situation was handled as trained.

In a statement, the airline said checks of earlier maintenance records did not show any unusual oil use in the engine. A detailed inspection of the aircraft is now underway. The plane involved is about 15 years old and has operated long-haul flights to cities such as Vienna, Vancouver, and Chicago, as per data from flight tracking service Flightradar24.

The flight was in the air for close to an hour before returning, according to tracking data. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has asked the airline to submit a full report on the incident, while the DGCA has been told to carry out a detailed review.

Air India said alternative travel plans were arranged for passengers headed to Mumbai, and the affected aircraft will remain grounded until all checks are completed. The airline also said it regretted the delay caused to passengers.

The aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, did not give an immediate response when contacted for comment.

The incident comes days after a separate Air India Express flight bound for Visakhapatnam was cancelled at Vijayawada airport after pilots noticed an engine-related issue while the plane was still on the ground. In that case, passengers were offered refunds, hotel stays, or free rebooking, and no one was hurt.

The Delhi–Mumbai flight returned due to a drop in engine oil pressure detected shortly after take-off. The aircraft landed safely, and no passengers were injured. Authorities have asked for reports, and technical checks are ongoing.
