Amit Shah inaugurates Rs 330 crore civic works in Ahmedabad, including Western Trunk drainage line

Gandhinagar, December 29, 2025: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated and e-inaugurated civic projects worth Rs 330 crore taken up by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also present. The event included the launch of the Western Trunk Main drainage line, which AMC says will reduce sewage overflow and backflow in parts of western and south-western Ahmedabad.

Officials said the drainage line is meant to serve around 15 lakh people in fast-growing neighbourhoods that have faced wastewater issues during peak load conditions.

The programme also saw the distribution of land ownership certificates (sanads) to rehabilitated residents of Nava Vanzar village, and the unveiling of an idol of Lord Ganesh at an event listed at Pakwan Cross Roads in Bodakdev, Ahmedabad.

According to reports and civic project notes shared ahead of the inauguration, the Western Trunk Main project has a planned length of 27.719 km, with 27.304 km completed. The line runs from Vaishnodevi Circle towards the Sabarmati river through areas such as Oganj, Shilaj, Ambli, Shantipura and Sanathal.

The project uses RCC pipes of large diameter, with reports citing 1,200 mm and 1,800 mm pipes, and also sections using 2,400/2,500 mm pipes. About 8,125 metres of work was completed using micro-tunnelling in parts of the route.

AMC and state government sources have linked the work to city sewer upgrades supported through urban development programmes, including AMRUT.

At the same event, Shah handed sanads to 173 rehabilitated beneficiaries from Nava Vanzar village. He said families who lost homes and belongings in the 1973 Sabarmati flood are now receiving plot ownership after 50 years.

The inauguration took place on December 28, with Monday’s reports carrying additional project details and the scale of the drainage line.

AMC has said the drainage work is aimed at giving a longer-term fix to overflow and backflow in western and south-western zones, where population and construction have grown quickly over the last two decades.

Ahmedabad launched a new Western Trunk Main drainage line as part of Rs 330 crore civic works inaugurated by Amit Shah in the presence of CM Bhupendra Patel. Officials say the project targets sewage overflow issues for about 15 lakh residents, while 173 resettled families from Nava Vanzar also received plot ownership certificates linked to the 1973 flood rehabilitation process.
