Guwahati, December 29, 2025: A 35-year-old man died after being assaulted by a group of people in the Hatimura area of Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati, after he was suspected of theft. Police said seven people have been arrested in the case.
The victim has been identified as Farzul Alam, 35, from the Tezpur area in Sonitpur district, police and local reports said.
Police said they received information that a man had been caught and assaulted by members of the public in Hatimura. He was taken to Sonapur hospital and later referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he died, according to police accounts shared with media outlets.
Reports quoting police said the incident took place at or linked to a private resort in the Sonapur area. One report said resort staff grew suspicious after the man was seen on the premises while seeking shelter.
Police said seven people have been arrested and produced in court. Those named in reports include Mustafizur Haque, Chitra Das, Ram Sonar, Sushil Nath, Satyajit (also reported as Stayojit) Haloi, Ranjit Brahma, and Manab Roy, who was described as part of the resort management.
A case has been registered at Sonapur police station. Reports said police have filed the case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions linked to mob killing and group assault.
Police said they are reviewing CCTV footage and recording witness statements as part of the investigation, and they have sought custody of the accused for questioning.
Family members of the man have called for a full investigation and strict action, local reports said.
