Foundation for Advancement of Essential Diagnostics (FAED) Announces 2025 Milestones: Expanding Last-Mile Healthcare and Diagnostic Access Across India

GUWAHATI, ASSAM – December 31, 2025 – The Foundation for Advancement of Essential Diagnostics (FAED), a premier non-profit research organization based at the BioNEST Bio-Incubation Centre, IIT Guwahati, today released its Annual Report for 2025. Marking its seventh anniversary, the organization reported significant expansion in its mission to prevent avoidable deaths through accurate, timely, and affordable diagnostic services.

2025 Strategic Achievements and Expansion. In a year defined by rapid growth, FAED expanded its collaborative research and needs assessment studies beyond Northeast India to include Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, and Uttar Pradesh. A major highlight of the year was the successful renewal of FAED’s recognition as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Government of India, valid through 2027.

“The impact we dream to have in every patient’s life drives every effort we make,” said Dr. Mustafa Barbhuiya, Founder Director of FAED. “Our team is dedicated to identifying diagnostic gaps across India’s health systems, particularly for the 70{3ed7819c3563dca85364f9c966d48c284cd3d43c23a196a6bbb99b5b9eebb247} of our population living in rural areas with informal healthcare delivery”.

Humanitarian Impact and Community Relief Throughout 2025, FAED demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility through several key initiatives:

  • Flood Relief in Assam: Supported over 3,000 individuals with medical relief and nutritional aid following severe flooding in the Barak Valley.
  • Manipur Crisis Response: Provided comprehensive medical and winter relief to 487 displaced individuals from tribal communities affected by regional clashes.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Advocacy: Enrolled as a Nikshay Mitra to provide nutritional support kits to 100 TB patients, with a 2026 goal of expanding this support to 900 disadvantaged patients.

Advancing Global Health Standards in India: FAED continues to lead, advocating for the implementation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Essential Diagnostics List (EDL) in India, which is tailored and adopted by the Indian Council of Medical Research as the National Essential Diagnostic List (NEDL). The organization’s 2025 nationwide survey of 327 public health facilities identified critical deficiencies in diagnostic infrastructure, particularly in rural and other geographically challenging regions. The FAED activities were presented at global forums throughout the year, including a presentation by Dr. Barbhuiya on FAED work at Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, USA, which highlighted diagnostic availability gaps for neglected tropical diseases.

Looking Ahead: The 2026 Vision FAED has set an ambitious roadmap for the coming year, including:

  • Integrated Polyclinic Model: Establishing a physical model polyclinic in Cachar, Assam, to provide a blueprint for last-mile healthcare delivery.
  • IVD Development: Advancing indigenous In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) tests for TB, arboviral fevers, and neglected tropical diseases.
  • Fundraising Goal: Striving to raise Rs. 1,00,00,000/- (Rupees One Crore/Rupees One Hundred Lacs) to sustain its mission and infrastructure development.

“No single organization can solve healthcare access challenges alone,” Dr. Barbhuiya emphasized. “We actively seek partnerships with CSR entities, philanthropic donors, impact investors and grants from government agencies to co-create sustainable, high-impact solutions.”
