Dhaka / New Delhi, January 5, 2026 — The Bangladesh government has directed television channels to stop airing the Indian Premier League after Kolkata Knight Riders released Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. The order was issued by the country’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and sent on Monday to Bangladesh Television and private sports broadcasters.
Officials said the decision followed strong public reaction in Bangladesh after the Board of Control for Cricket in India asked KKR to free the left-arm pacer from the team. The ministry did not give a timeline for how long the suspension will remain in place. Broadcasters have been told to comply until further instructions are issued.
Mustafizur Rahman is one of Bangladesh’s most followed cricketers and has represented the country in several global tournaments. His release from the IPL side has drawn attention in both cricket boards, though neither KKR nor the BCCI has released a fresh public statement on the matter as of Monday evening.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, the Supreme Court on Monday refused bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots. The court, however, granted bail to five other accused in the same case, including Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohammad Saleem Khan and Shadab Ahmed. The bench said the individual roles of the accused had to be considered separately while deciding bail pleas.
The Delhi riots case relates to violence that broke out in parts of the national capital in February 2020, leading to multiple deaths and injuries. The trial in the matter is still ongoing in lower courts.
In aviation-related updates, IndiGo Airlines said flight operations at Leh airport were temporarily stopped on Monday due to heavy snowfall in the region. The airline warned passengers of possible delays and cancellations and advised them to check flight status before leaving for the airport.
Airport authorities said weather conditions in Ladakh remain difficult during winter months, and flight schedules are often affected due to snow and low visibility. Normal operations are expected to resume once weather conditions improve.
