Veteran Malayalam actor, screenwriter and filmmaker Sreenivasan passed away in Kochi on Saturday, December 20, 2025. He was 69. He had been dealing with health problems for several years.
According to hospital sources, Sreenivasan was on his way to dialysis at a private hospital in Kochi when he developed breathing trouble. He was moved to the Government Taluk Hospital in Tripunithura, where he died later in the day. He had earlier undergone heart surgery in 2022.
Born on April 6, 1956, in Patyam near Thalassery in Kannur district, Sreenivasan became one of the most familiar faces and voices in Malayalam cinema. Over a career of nearly five decades, he acted in more than 225 films and wrote scripts that spoke directly to everyday life, family struggles, and social issues. Many of his films remain popular even years after their release.
As a filmmaker, Sreenivasan directed only two films, Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala. Both films received wide praise and won major awards. He often said he chose to make only a few films as a director and stand by them, rather than make many without purpose.
Senior actor Mohanlal said that audiences saw their own lives reflected in the characters written by Sreenivasan. In a social media post, he said Sreenivasan showed both the pain and joy of ordinary people in a way few others could.
Tributes also came from political leaders. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Sreenivasan’s death was a major loss to Malayalam cinema. In a statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office, he said Sreenivasan brought the life of the common man to the screen with honesty and humour, while questioning social habits and beliefs.
Sreenivasan received several honours during his career, including a National Film Award, Filmfare Awards South, and multiple Kerala State Film Awards. His scripts were known for clear ideas, strong characters, and social comment.
He is survived by his wife, Vimala and his sons, actors Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan. According to actor and writer Renji Panicker, Sreenivasan’s body will be taken to his residence and later to the Town Hall for the public to pay their respects. Public viewing is scheduled to begin at 1 pm.
No further official updates have been released so far regarding the funeral arrangements.
What we know so far is that Sreenivasan died following breathing problems while travelling for medical treatment. He had a long history of heart-related illness and kidney issues. Family members and close colleagues were present in Kochi.
People are asking when the public can pay their respects. Officials have said the body will be kept at the Town Hall from 1 pm for public homage. Many also want to know about funeral details, but authorities have said more information will be shared later.
Sreenivasan leaves behind a body of work that continues to connect with audiences across generations. His films and characters remain a part of daily conversation in Kerala, long after their release.
